Abstract bird carving. Hand carved from sugar pine.
I usually paints birds in oils, but this one is custom oil “stained.” Sugar pine doesn’t want to take stain too well… the yellow “stripe” you see on the front and back show areas that just didn’t soak up the artists pigments as well. It’s part of the organic process of using this wood for this carving and the grain direction that shows.
The color palette came when I was looking at pictures of exotic birds, and the Nicobar Pigeon caught my eye. The carving itself isn’t supposed to represent that pigeon in any way, I just liked the colors of the bird and needed a simple three-color scheme to make the carving come to life.
Dimensions are approx 10″ high, 5″ wide and 3″ deep.
